Garnisonstadt

2020

Garrison is the collective term for any body of troops stationed in a particular location, originally to guard it, but now often simply using it as a home base. The garrison is usually in a city, town, fort, castle, ship or similar. “Garrison town” is a common expression for any town that has a military base nearby.

Statue on a fountain in Walenstadt, in front of city hall. It is a memorial for soldiers who served in world war one, erected in 1920. It is the earliest soldier memorial on the canton of St. Gallen’s soil. The soldier stands in uniform typical of the day, and his rifle is down to signify standing guard. It was cast in shell limestone and then worked over. The soldier’s gaze looks down the long street reaching to the train station and main road, greeting visitors but reminding them that this town is being watched over.
